Artist Statement

Karen has exhibited widely in Liverpool and Merseyside over the last few years and has recently completed a Masters Degree at Liverpool John Moores University, in association with Tate Liverpool.

Her work uses the medium of paint in innovative and distinctive ways, often misleading or confusing the viewer as to its true nature. Despite appearances, all her work featured here is produced purely with acrylic paint on top of the canvas, with the addition of some powdered glitter in a few of the paintings.

"I explore paint as a modern medium, searching modes of application and interpretation while still making reference to the long tradition of painting as Art and artefact. I am intrigued by representation and application of meanings. My work is textural and tactile so that often it is mistaken as mixed media, such as metallic paint looking like wire or embroidery thread, or dried paint seeming like paper. This is an aspect of paint creating an illusion of reality; representation, but in a non-traditional way."
